Manly Makeovers: Elevating Your Space with Interior Design Tips for Men

January 28, 2024

Design for Men

For the last four decades, Sutton Place Interior Design has enjoyed working in a multitude of spaces, with a diverse clientele, and after all of this time, we still strive to continuously be creative and implement unique ideas. Following this blueprint led us to the idea of breaking the stereotype that interior design only applies to women. For all the guys out there, or the ladies looking to create a perfect space for the man of the house, read on for guy-friendly ideas and trends.
“Man-centric” spaces are not always “for the boys.” I know many of our clients enjoy the bold patterns, big pieces of art or furniture utilized, and more pronounced elements of design. Men want to make a statement in their spaces, but a lot of homes benefit from a design that is chunkier and not full of floral patterns!
Enjoy this style? Here are a few ways to show off a masculine vibe in a way that reverberates in class…
* Create a modern look that will not be dated next year. If it was hip five years ago and is still relevant by today’s standards, then it will probably still be the right piece in five years’ time.
*Consider investing in one piece, and then adding to that piece a few years down the line, rather than having to replace things later. The idea is to find pieces that have a great aesthetic and are reliable, but that can change and grow with you. For example, a high-quality gray couch will look good in a more minimal space, but will also work well in a more colorful setting with lots of moldings.
*Color is one way to get a great look while on a budget. Choosing beautiful, rich, masculine hues; navy or charcoal will help
create a darker, cozier, more luxurious-looking space.
*Use light to set the feel of the room. Task lighting in the kitchen and low-key lighting in areas of relaxation.
*Do not use your favorite team colors to decorate your room. Yes, we are serious. Football teams belong on jerseys, not wallpaper.
*Skip “electro mania”; in fact, if you are striving for a better environment, keep your ego out of your electronics! Conceal your speakers, hide your exposed wires, and don’t buy a television that is too big for the room.
*Finish what you start. Unless you are still in college, starting a design project but never getting around to finishing it will simply make your place appear as it is: half done. Also, nix the futon! If you need a dual-purpose space, consider a Murphy bed.
*Find a versatile piece for entertaining guests like a bar cart. It can easily serve as a side table that can hold a lamp, and when you wish to entertain, stock it with a bucket of ice and a martini shaker.
*The “Must Have” splurge? Paint. If you have to wash your walls, you don’t want the paint to come off, which will happen if it’s cheap.
*Extravagant splurges? Flooring. Leather floors and multiple area rugs (think jute!) from different places give a nice vibe to a room. Heated floors or hardwood floors with patterns such as herringbone are also gaining popularity.
*In the bedroom, you must put a duvet comforter over the white down insert. You are banned from a fur blanket, especially if the head is still attached. And, if you are over 21, both fitted and flat sheets are required.
* Best advice for guys with an empty wallet? A clean, neat space is always going to get a positive reaction. Pick it up, put it away or wash it.

Seriously, we love to give the guys a hard time but regardless of how you design your space, these tips hold true. Still want to show off your one-of-a-kind signed football helmet? Call us. We can help you incorporate it somewhere and still impress your guests.
